These are 14-pin single row machined round pin (Swiss style) gold plated male headers.

The shorter side pins are designed to be soldered into a PCB such as a SMD to DIP adapter.  The long side male pins mate with machined round IC sockets or machined round break-away strips.  They will also work in standard IC sockets and will also work in  solderless breadboards and solder type proto boards.

Because the pins are smaller and shorter than a standard male header pin, they will not work for mating with a standard female header.

These 40-pin strips can be easily snapped or cut into whatever lengths of pins that are needed for the project by using pliers or diagonal cutters.  Because the center barrel of the contact is fairly large where it passes though the plastic housing, some of the contact may be exposed on the end where the break occurs when snapped.  This is not normally an issue and the contact will remain firmly in the plastic housing.  If it is desired to minimize this, use a sharp box knife to cut between the pins.  Be sure to use a suitable cutting mat beneath the pins when using this method.

When soldering these headers onto a board, it is easiest if you insert them into a solderless breadboard or perf board in order to hold the connectors aligned during the soldering process.
