KEY FEATURES OF POLYIMIDE (KAPTON) TAPE:
- Excellent electrical insulation
- High temperature resistant
- Tough – puncture resistant
- Thin semi-transparent
- Good adhesive qualities
Polyimide tape is commonly referred to by its original brand name of ‘Kapton’.
It is a very useful tape in electronic work and should be in any electronic tool box. It is thin and has excellent electrical insulation properties with good puncture resistant. The silicone based adhesive sticks to most substrates and the tape can handle high temperatures of at least 260°C.
The tape is a transparent orange in color so it is possible to see what it is covering and it removes without leaving any residue behind.
This tape is used frequently for masking printed circuit boards during solder reflow and on 3D printer setups due to its ability to handle high temperatures.
For electrical work, it works well for providing electrical insulation to avoid shorting hazards such as when a circuit board is close to a metal enclosure or for insulating battery terminals. Some Arduino shields for instance can short to the USB connector on the main board. Polyimide tape can be used to insulate the top of the USB connector so that this isn’t a concern.
Another use is to provide temporary protection for components when soldering in close proximity to something that may melt if the soldering iron touches it, such as a connector.
We use it frequently for temporarily mounting thermocouple probes during product testing.
