KEY FEATURES OF HEADER SET LOW PROFILE:
For the vertically challenged, we have these high quality low profile header sets available to reduce the stack-up height of socketed microcontrollers or similar modules.
The female header body is 0.18″ tall. The contacts are gold with tin solder tails. The body is ribbed and can be snapped or cut to the length desired. Using a good flush cutting plier with the flat side toward the end you care about will typically preserve the contact on that side. The contact on the other side will typically be partially exposed.
The male header body is 0.06″ and has 0.162″ long mating pins. These are just long enough to still mate well with most solderless breadboards. Both the mating pins and solder tails are gold plated as the male connector can be reversed as noted down below. As is typical with male headers, the body is ribbed and can be snapped to length quite easily.
Even with a short contact area, the headers mate with a solid mechanical and electrical connection. When these headers are stacked, the combined height is 0.28″ (7.1mm). This saves about 0.16″ (4mm) in height over the standard height headers as shown in the picture.
When mated, the male header stands about 1mm (.040″) proud of the female header body when fully seated. To squeeze another 1mm out of the height, the male header can be inverted and the the shorter solder legs inserted into the female housing. This still provides the same full mechanical and electrical mating as shown in the picture.
The main downside to inverting the male header is that the mating pins will now be too short to insert into a solderless breadboard should that be a consideration. Inverting the connector will also leave an extra 1mm of solder tail on the top side of the board which can be cut off if needed.
The male header breaks very easily. When breaking the female header, the best method is to use two small electronic style pliers and grab the header on either side of the desired break line and flex the connector sideways. this will typically preserve the contact on both sides of the break. Alternatively, a sharp box knife can be used to cut between the contacts by pressing down hard or tapping it with a rubber mallet.
