These are good quality 1×40 single row gold plated male headers that can be cut or snapped to the length required. The tail/post is extended length to provide male header contacts on both sides of the header once installed.

These headers are commonly used soldered to MCU boards to provide a standard male contact for plugging into a solderless breadboard or female header on the bottom while also providing a male header contact on the top of the MCU so that logic analyzer or O’scope probes can be connected directly to the MCU pins. The upper side pins will also mate with a female header and can be clipped off to normal length if they are no longer needed at some point.
The longer side pins are designed to be soldered to the PCB. The extra length helps make up the difference in the thickness of the PCB. The pins insert from the bottom and are soldered on top. Use care not to get solder up too high on the pin or it can interfere with whatever you want to plug onto it.
These 40-pin strips can be easily snapped or cut into whatever lengths of pins that are needed for the project by using pliers or diagonal cutters.
When soldering these headers onto a board, it is easiest if you insert the headers into a solderless breadboard or similar in order to hold the connectors aligned during the soldering process.
Another use for these headers is to adapter a female connector to a solderless breadboard or other female connector. The pins are long enough to fully insert into both female connectors. The picture below shows the standard female JST style connector found on a fan adapted to plug into a solderless breadboard.
These headers have a gold flash coating to minimize risk of corrosion and improve conductivity. The flash gold plating does not interfere with the soldering of the header.
