Description
The CP2102 USB to TTL Serial Interface Adapter provides a bridge that allows you to connect between TTL serial devices and a USB port.
PACKAGE INCLUDES:
- CP2102 USB to TTL Serial Interface Adapter
KEY FEATURES OF CP2102 USB TO TTL SERIAL INTERFACE ADAPTER:
- Provides bridge between TTL serial communications and USB port
- USB 2.0 compatible up to 12Mbps
- Male USB type-A connector
- Provides 3.3 and 5V outputs derived from USB 5V power.
This adapter is based on the CP2102 chip and provides a bridge for communicating between a typical TTL level serial communication (UART) port as found on many microcontrollers and the USB port normally found on a computer. This is commonly required when you are programming a new board through its programming interface if it does not have a USB port. It can also be used to add an additional USB interface to a microcontroller.
Note: Some modules may have an insulating sleeve as shown in the pictures, but most do not.
Power
Power for this module come from the USB port.
That USB power is also made available on the header +5V pin for use in powering up the board that the module is plugged into if needed. The total current draw on the USB should not exceed 500mA.
The board also has a 3V3 header pin. This is the output of the CP2102 built-in 3.3V regulator. Maximum current that can be drawn from that pin is about 75mA.
Module Connections
The module uses a standard USB Type-A male connector on one end and a serial TTL interface is brought out to a right angle header on the other end.
Hookup is straightforward. The USB end plugs directly into your computer or into a USB extension cable.
On the TTL side, most applications will just use the RX and TX pins cross-connected between the CP2102 module and your other device.
- The RX pin on the module goes to the TX pin on device
- The TX pin on the module goes to RX pin on device.
- The GND pin of the module goes to the ground on the device.
- If you are using the module to power the device, you will also need to connect the 5V pin to the 5V power pin of the device.
The pin-out of the right angle header is as follows.
1 x 6 Right Angle Header
- 3V3 = 3.3V power output. (75mA current limit)
- TX = Serial data Transmit pin, connects to RX on the device
- RX = Serial data Receive pin, connects to TX on the device
- GND = Ground is connected to ground on the device being controlled.
- +5V = 5V output – This is the USB 5V power that is made available on this pin. (500mA current limit)
There are blue transmit and receive LEDs on the module that show activity on these lines. There is also a red power LED that is always on when power is applied.
A driver is needed to communicate with the device. Most computers come with CP2102 drivers preinstalled. If the module is inserted into the computer and not recognized, a driver is needed. It can be downloaded from here: CP2102 Drivers
OUR EVALUATION RESULTS:
These are good quality modules and is the same part that we supply with our Teensy for Blurred Application kits and they have worked very well in that application.
BEFORE THEY ARE SHIPPED, THESE MODULES ARE:
- Sample inspected and tested per incoming shipment.
