The AC adapter plugs into an AC outlet and provides 5VDC output for powering devices that require a 5VDC input at 2A or less. It can be handy for powering 5V circuits directly or providing power to a 3.3V LDO regulator.
The DC power plug is a standard 5.5mm x 2.1mm male plug. The module has a green power LED lit when AC power is applied.
OUR EVALUATION RESULTS:
These AC adapters work as advertised, but at the maximum rated load of 2A, the unit is running pretty warm and ripple increases. They seem happiest if kept at around 1.5A or less.
Output regulation over load is decent. Typical output measured 5.25V @ 100mA load, 4.9V @ 1A, 4.75V @1.5A and 4.5V @ 2A. At the highest current, the voltage is 10% under the nominal 5V which may be an issue for some circuits if powering a 5V circuit directly
Ripple and noise is fair and ranges from 160mV at light loads to about 360mV at 1.5A. At the full 2A, the ripple and noise increases to about 400mV. Ripple waveform below is shown at a 2A load where it is measured at 400mV.
For use with our solderless breadboard power supplies or powering Arduino 5V type microcontrollers, our 7.5V 1A AC Adapter is a better fit since those devices have a built in 5V regulator and need more than 5V to operate.
